For YEARS I have recommended my small business clients harness blogging as a way to generate content and revenue for their websites; all-the-while ignoring my own advice, go figure. In my defense, I've thought long and hard about the general direction of my blog. My primary concern, defining my own unique approach. Yet I would constantly arrive at the obvious; "write a geeky design blog for other geeky designers to learn from". Pssh! Millions of those things exist, I should know. I'm subscribed to-like, a MILLION of em'. And generally, that is the challenge we'll all face; What can we talk about and who will care?
So, instead of jumping in feet first I concentrated on refining my services and areas of expertise. Eventually, I evolved into more than just a creator. While managing my own business, (the least fun part for any creative freelancer) I developed strategies and solutions that helped me with production and client acquisition. Eventually, I began passing these ideas to the most loyal of my small-business clients. I soon realized many mid to small-businesses have all but abandoned marketing and branding as a business strategy. I couldn't understand at first but then thought; How many marketing firms are targeting your proverbial "mom and pops" overall? Many small businesses prioritize operations and tend not to focus on growth. So I began consulting my clients on internet marketing and its probable impact. I've referred helpful third-party marketing services and general education on much of the geeky stuff.
So here we are, my new blog focused on branding and marketing strategies aimed at mid-to-small level businesses. My goal is to help you reevaluate your brand or even better, discover whether or not you have one. Also, give you some tips on free or at least some economical internet marketing options. I have hopes that small business owners will gain a better understanding of marketing and branding, harness that power for themselves and share it with their colleagues.
